Glad it’s digital!

One New Habit

To get more good shots and fewer duds, try changing a single habit.

Instead of rushing a single shot and moving on (Shoot and Scoot! 🛵), only to look at the results after the moment has passed, invest an extra 30 seconds right then to intentionally change something about the problem shots: camera setting, subject, or environment. Subject too dark? Change it. Out of focus? Change it. Boring? Change it. Better? Good! Worse? Try making the change in the opposite direction.

With that little bit of additional thought and effort AT THE MOMENT, your photography will most certainly improve over time.

What to Change

What to change about the shot depends completely on what you aren’t happy with. It could be a basic technical issue, like exposure or focus. Or, it could be something more advanced or subtle, like composition, noise, or “emotion.”

In coming blog posts, I’ll cover a many aspects of improving your photography. In this installment, let’s start with:

THE BASICS

Too light or too dark? Change aperture. If too light, a smaller aperture (higher f/ number, e.g. f/8 to f/16) will let less light into the camera and darken your image. If too dark, a larger aperture (lower f/ number, e.g f/8 to f/4) will let more light into the camera and lighten your image.Alternately, if too light, you could increase your shutter speed (higher 1/ number, e.g. 1/100 sec to 1/200 sec) to allow less time for light to enter the camera and darken your image. Or if too dark, you could decrease your shutter speed (lower 1/ number, e.g. 1/100 sec to 1/50 sec) to allow more time for light to enter the camera and lighten your image. Do be careful about decreasing shutter speed too much, or you could have problems with…

Too dark; aperture too small or shutter speed too fast.

Blurry (not sharp in a particular direction)? Increase shutter speed (higher 1/ number, e.g. 1/50 sec to 1/200 sec) to reduce the time light is allowed into camera and reduce the impact of subject or camera motion.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-144 size-medium" src="https://i0.wp.com/gibsonoutdoorphoto.comwp-content/uploads/2017/07/SRGIBSON_20170616_IMG_9945-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200" alt="Blurry.
